Sustainable medical training in Eritrea – Our mission at met4a
- 6. March 2025
As an association “Medical education and training for Africa” (met4a), we are fully committed to sustainably improving medical care in Eritrea. Our goal is to strengthen local medical expertise through targeted training and further education programs and to provide help for self-help.
Why our work is important
Eritrea has a solid basic medical education. However, there is a lack of continuous training, especially for young doctors. “The training in the country is not bad at all. But the young doctors don’t get any further training”, explains our chairman Professor Helmut Kaulhausen. This is where we come in, passing on our knowledge and conducting practical training courses together with our colleagues in Eritrea.
Our focus: Surgical training and obstetrics
We place particular emphasis on two key areas: surgical training for doctors and further education in obstetrics. We not only teach technical skills, but also how to use medical equipment safely. At the same time, we are committed to providing sound training for midwives, as they are often the first point of contact for expectant mothers and make a crucial contribution to healthcare.
Our long-term commitment
Many of our members have already worked in countries such as Eritrea, Ghana and South Sudan and know that sustainable change can only be achieved through continuous presence and knowledge transfer. “We want to work on the ground in the long term in order to really make a difference”, emphasizes our board member, gynecologist Christian Gnoth.
With our official registration as an association, we can apply for funding and further expand our work. We are only at the beginning, but with commitment and support we want to improve medical care in Eritrea in the long term.
Conclusion
Our work at met4a is a crucial step towards sustainable medical care in Eritrea. Through targeted training and further education, we enable doctors and midwives to carry out their work even better and independently. With long-term commitment and international cooperation, we are creating a stable basis for local healthcare. We are convinced that every contribution counts and that together we can achieve a great deal. Help us.
